Shamardal in line for second Poulains winner

SHAMARDAL, sire of last year's Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Lope De Vega, today bids for consecutive winners of the French Classic with Modern History. The Andre Fabre-trained colt is set to be partnered by Frankie Dettori and he is out of Fatefully, who was one of Dettori's ‘magnificent seven' at Ascot in 1996 when winning the Listed Rosemary Rated Stakes. Fatefully has already produced one Group 1 winner in the shape of Nassau Stakes scorer Favourable Terms.

Glaswegian is by Favourable Terms' sire Selkirk anddescended from Nijinsky Star, one of his owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah's foundation mares and ancestress of Prix de la Foret winner Etoile Montante and last year's Newmarket and Longchamp 1,000 Guineas heroine Special Duty.

The Dansili colt Surfrider also has connections to a former French Guineas winner: he is a half-brother to Listed winner Enticement from the family of 1994 Poulains scorer Green Tune.

Havane Smoker is by Makfi's sire Dubawi and descended from his breeder Meon Valley Stud's exceptional foundation mare Reprocolor, ancestress of numerous star performers including Kayf Tara, Opera House and Friday's Swettenham Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes winner Izzi Top.

Aussie Rules' finest hour on the track came when winning the 2006 Poulains and the race could again be good to him, as his son Private Jet bids to give him a first-crop Classic winner. Aussie Rules' fellow second-season sire Iffraaj already has one Classic winner on his record - Stay Alive in the Italian 1,000 Guineas - and Wootton Bassett could give him a second today.

Japanese first-season sire Deep Impact has made a flying start to his stud career and also already has a Classic winner on the board with Marcellina in the Japanese 1,000 Guineas. He is represented today by Barocci.

Only one member of the French stallion ranks is represented in this year's Poulains - Haras du Hoguenet sire Panis, who fields Maiguri.
