SGA appoints John Clarke as consultant

ITALIAN auction house SGA has appointed former Irish National Stud chief executive John Clarke as a consultant, to help with yearling selection for its sales.

SGA chief executive Umberto Pianca said: "We are really happy to have Mr Clarke in our team and at the same time wewant to thank Saverio Brenciaglia, who had assisted us for many years doing a very good job."

He added: "Mr Clarke's help will give SGA an international dimension."

Clarke was bloodstock manager of Tattersalls Ireland for eight years before joining the Irish National Stud as chief executive in 1983. During his tenure the stud acquired the successful stallions Indian Ridge and Invincible Spirit, and raised Sea The Stars.

He stepped down from that role earlier this year and has since been working as an independent bloodstock advisor, most notably to Sea The Stars' owners the Tsui family.

Clarke, who has attended yearling sales in Milan for over 25 years, said: "The SGA yearling sale has made enormous progress, especially in recent years, and I am delighted to be able to assist SGA in its yearling selection."

This year's SGA yearling sale takes place on September 24 and 25, with around 100 lots due to be sold in the first session, and around 200 to be sold in the second.
