IN line with many other sales  this year, the Arqana February Mixed Sale at Deauville yesterday ended with figures far adrift from last year's renewal.

The single session sale saw 144 horses sell in the ring for a total of €815,500, a decline of 20 per cent, and an average of €5,663, a drop of 33 per cent. The median fell by 15 per cent to €3,000. However, the clearance rate rose by 12 per cent to 68 per cent.

It took a bid of just €32,000 from Abeth Mussat to secure the sale-topper, Sarissa. The 12-year-old daughter of Diesis is the dam of three winners and was a member of Dylan Thomas' first book of mares last year. She was consigned by Haras d'Etreham.

As expected, the Wattinne dispersal drew several admirers with 42 horses selling for a total of €269,000 - 33 per cent of the entire aggregate.

Topping their draft was the triple winner Dalina, a half-sister to the high-class French jumper Multipass, for whom Blue Spirit paid €30,000. The daughter of Trempolino also ran second in the Grade 2 Prix Amadou over jumps at Auteuil.

British buyers were active throughout the session with Stephen Hillen paying €43,000 for two lots, including €25,000 for the Linamix mare Pax Bella. Highflyer Bloodstock purchased two lots for a total of€30,000 while McKeever St Lawrence paid €19,000 for Sadika, a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sueboog.
