Sarafina wins the Prix Saint Alary Longchamp 23.05.2010

Sarafina lands the Prix St Alary at Longchamp in May under Gerald Mosse

First classic joy for Refuse To Bend

SARAFINA, who last month became her sire Refuse To Bend's first Group 1 winning produce in winning the Prix St Alary, added further glory to her stallion's stud record when heading a one-two for the Aga Khan in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly on Sunday.

Now unbeaten in three starts, the Aga Khan homebred filly's success is a timely boost for Whitsbury Manor Stud near Salisbury, where the stallion is standing his first season having served five seasonsat Kildangan Stud.

Whitsbury Manor Stud director Edward Harper said yesterday: "We're absolutely delighted. It's a great result for Refuse To Bend because she looks like being the highest-class three-year-old filly in Europe. Being as good a winner as he was by Sadler's Wells, that's the sort of horse he should be capable of siring. We now hope she can go on to perform well in the Arc.

"Hopefully owner-breeders can take advantage of him in the knowledge that he can produce a top-class horse", he added.

Sarafina is another successful example of the Sadler's Wells-Darshaan cross, as her unraced dam Sanariya is a daughter of Darshaan. The sixth foal of her dam, she is a three-parts sister to Sanaya, who was herself second in the Prix St Alary and is by another Guineas-winning son of Sadler's Wells in Barathea.

Harper continued: "We're delighted to be standing a son of Sadler's Wells who has produced a Classicwinner. We wouldn't have been able to get him if things had gone to plan at Kildangan, but we have priced him very competitively and we think we can do a good job with him at Whitsbury."

Refuse To Bend stood for £5,000 this year, having commanded €20,000 in his first four seasons at Kildangan. There was further joy for the stallion at Cork yesterday when Grace O'Malley won the Group 3 Kerry Group Noblesse Stakes, a race won by the four-year-old filly last year.
