New Grade 1 winner
for Lemon Drop Kid

Saturday: Santa Maria Handicap (Grade 1) 1m 1/2f, Santa Anita

SANTA TERESITA (5 m Lemon Drop Kid - Sweet Gold)

LEMON Drop Kid received Grade 1 winner number four on Saturday when Southern Equine Stables' Santa Teresita bounded away to take the Santa Maria Handicap by two and a half lengths.

The five-year-old mare, who ran third to Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Lady's Secret Handicap in September, joins Citronnade, Lemons Forever and Christmas Kid on the stallion's list of elite performers.

However, it is worth noting that all of Lemon Drop Kid's Grade 1 winners to date are fillies, although last season's Grade 3 winner Break Water Edison remains on the Kentucky Derby trail despite a lack-lustre last time out display in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes while turf specialist Cosmonaut has been Grade 1-placed on two occasions.

Later in the afternoon, Lemon Drop Kid landed a stakes double when Richard's Kid won the Listed John B. Campbell Handicap at Laurel Park.

Lemon Drop Kid is best remembered as the horse who ended Charismatic's Triple Crown hopes with victory in the 1999 Belmont Stakes. However, the regally-bred son of Kingmambo was also a Grade 1 winner at two, courtesy of a success in the Futurity Stakes, and a champion at four, when he won the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap and Grade 1 Woodward Stakes.

He will stand the 2009 season at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky for $50,000.

Bred by Stonerside Stables and Westwind Farm in the US, Santa Teresita is a half-sister to the Italian Listed winner Sweet Hearth (by Touch Gold) and the Grade 3-placed Warners (by Dehere).

Her dam, the Gilded Time mare Sweet Gold, was unplaced in the US but is a half-sister to four stakes performers including Grade 2 winner The Lone Ranger and the Grade 1-placed Dancing Pretense.
