Zafisio another top-class descendant of Reprocolor

THE Paul Blockley-trained two-year-old Zafisio won the Criterium International on Sunday, and in the process provided yet another Group 1 winner for his great-great-grand-dam, the outstanding matriarch Reprocolor, who passed away at her owner's Meon Valley Stud earlier this year.

Bred by Airlie Stud in partnership with Sir Thomas Pilkington, Zafisio is owned by Mr H. Downs. By Efisio and out of the nine-year-old Zafonic mare Goldthroat, the colt is a half-brother to this year's dual 1m winner Harald Bluetooth and dual 9-10f winner New Beginning.

Reprocolor was one of three foundation mares at Meon Valley Stud, where she founded a famous empire. She counts the Group 1 winners Colorspin, Opera House, Kayf Tara, Zee Zee Top, Necklace and Cezanne among her descendants.

Zafisio, her latest Group 1 winner, is from what had been one of the less successful branches of the family. Before his victory in the Criterium International, only one black-type performer appeared under his third dam, Rappa Tap Tap.

Despite his illustrious ancestress, Zafisio was recorded as not sold as a foal, a vendor buyback as a yearling, and not sold again at the breeze-up sales earlier this year.

Consigned by Airlie Stud at the 2006 Tattersalls December foal sale, Zafisio was bought in for 27,000gns. Re-offered at the next autumn's Goffs Sportsman sale,he was led out of the ring unsold.

Consigned by Knockanglass Stables at this year's Tattersalls Craven breeze-up sale, he failed to reach his reserve and was again led out of the ring unsold, at 38,000gns.
