Japanese Group 2 success for Gibraltar colt

ROCK Of Gibraltar's sole Japanese-bred crop, conceived in 2007 at the Shizunai Stallion Station, produced its first stakes winner on Saturday when Eishin Osman took the Group 2 New Zealand Trophy at Hanshin.

The three-year-old colt, trained by Masahiro Matsunaga, won the 18-runner event by a length-and-a-half from A Shin Jackal (by Fuji Kiseki). Eishin Osman is the 35th Group winner overall for his sire.

Rock Of Gibraltar stands at Coolmore in Ireland for €17,500 and is set to shuttle to Haras Don Alberto in Chile for the southern hemisphere season.

He is the third foal and second winner out of the 2001-02 Argentinean champion Guernika, who won four Group 1 races over 1m to 1m2f. She is a daughter of the Forty Niner stallion Luhuk, who was trained by John Dunlop to win twice at Listed level in 1994 before taking up stud duties in Argentina, where he has been hugely successful.

In turn, Guernika is out of the dual Group 1-winning Argentinean sprinter Gouache.
