Rite Of Passage beats Age Of Aquarius to win the Ascot Gold Cup 17.06.2010

Rite Of Passage starts to grind Age Of Aquarius into submission

Causeway's son Rite on song in Gold Cup

RITE OF PASSAGE, the Newsells Park-bred son of Giant's Causeway, proved his trainer Dermot Weld's decision to run him in the staying championship on only his third Flat start a correct one, outstaying Age Of Aquarius to secure a first win in the race for his trainer in course record time on Thursday.

In doing so, his sire has shown his versatility in producing a top-class stayer. The ‘Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway, never out of the first two in his career despite ten top-level appearances, has sired many progeny who like himself excelled over 1m to 1m2f, such as Shamardal, Eskendereya, Ghanaati and Footstepinthesand.

And Rite Of Passage, if not inheriteing his sire's miler speed, showed resilience reminiscent of Giant's Causeway's ‘won't be beaten' attitude in wearing down his Johnny Murtagh-ridden rival.

Notably, Rite Of Passage started his racing career in bumpers, finishing third to Dunguib in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival, and was third to Peddlers Cross in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle in March.

Rite Of Passage descends in direct tail female line to champion European racemare Dahlia, his third dam.
