Rio De La Plata retired to stud in Normandy
GODOLPHIN'S triple Group 1 winner Rio De La Plata has been retired and will begin his stud career at the Haras du Logis in Normandy, France, next year.
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained son of Rahy was a top-class two-year-old, with impressive victories in the Vintage Stakes and Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
Rio De La Plata also split the top-class pair New Approach and Myboycharlie when second in the National Stakes that season.
In his Classic season he finished placed in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix Jean Prat, and he was kept in training until the age of seven this year.
His five-year-old season proved to be one of his most fruitful - that year he won five races including the Darley Stakes, the Premio Vittorio di Capua and the Premio Roma.
Rio De La Plata was bred in America out of Express Way, an Argentiean-bred daughter of Ahmad who hails from a good South American family.
Darley’s director of stallions Sam Bullard said: "Rio de la Plata was a very high-class two-year-old who proved to be notably durable and talented over a long career at the top.
"With those attributes, his powerful looks and his telling burst of acceleration, plus a pedigree that is an outcross to the major lines of the day, we are sure he will be popular with breeders.”
