John Osborne: "While some have already written the scheme's obituary, we feel that there is scope to reinvent it"

'Reinventing' bonus scheme a possibility

RACING Post Yearling Bonus scheme chairman John Osborne wasn't ruling out the possibility of ‘reinventing' the scheme on Wednesday as talks loom as to whether to extend the initiative to 2012 yearlings.

"We have flagged the fact that the Racing Post Yearling Bonus scheme has reached a major milestone and that we ought to engage in some consultation with interested parties," he said.

"By definition, horsemen are not short of opinion and one of the greatest achievements of the scheme was the ability to assemble such a strong consensus, across the borders, towards the stimulation of trade, the retention of owners and the development of new clients and markets."

Desire from industry members for the continued existence of the bonus scheme would see a fourth edition of the initiative launched later this year. In turn, Osborne said there could be scope to redesign the format in order to reenergise support.

He said: "We would not be in a hurry to jettison that strength and unity of purpose but some of our supporters may be developing a degree of fatigue. We have consulted with some producers and we invite further comment on the benefits of the scheme. While some have already written the scheme's obituary, we feel that there is scope to reinvent it.

"It will never have the scope to solve all our problems, but it would be a shame if the initiative which harnessed so much positive energy should end in rancour.

"The scheme has always relied absolutely on the support of the vendors and that has not changed. If there is a desire for the scheme to continue, it will happen. If we can redesign it to reenergise the support and to improve the outcome for everybody, even better."
