Elzaam first Euro stakes winner for Redoute's

LAST season's Coventry Stakes runner-up Elzaam confirmed himself a sprinter of massive potential by crushing his rivals in Friday's Listed Whitman Howard Investment Bank Carnarvon Stakes for three-year-olds over 6f at Newbury.

The colt, trained by Roger Varian for Hamdan Al Maktoum, won by six lengths from Cape To Rio (by Captain Rio) to become the first stakeswinner in Europe for his sire, champion Australian stallion Redoute's Choice.

Elzaam is among a group of three-year-olds by Redoute's Choice who were conceived to northern hemisphere time at Arrowfield Stud in Australia in 2007.

The others include the promising Tazahum, a dual winner for Sir Michael Stoute who scored in the Esher Cup handicap last time out.

Redoute's Choice, a son of Danehill, will stand the 2011 southern-hemsphere breeding season at Arrowfield at a fee of A$137,500 (£89,800, €103,000). He is the sire of 20 individual Group 1 winners including Australian champions Fashions Afield, Miss Finland and Samantha Miss.

Elzaam was bred by Kia Ora Stud out of the Kingmambo mare Mambo In Freeport, a winning half-sister to Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes winner Point Ashley.

Sheikh Hamdan bought him for €280,000 from the consignment of Haras d'Etreham at the 2009 Arqana August yearling sale.
