Record-breaking mare Mackie euthanised

THE 16-year-old Summer Squall mare Mackie, whose $5 million price tag when sold in foal to Mr. Prospector at the 2000 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale remains a record for that auction, was put down in March after suffering foaling complications while giving birth to a foal by Any Given Saturday, who also died.

Bred in Kentucky by John R. Gaines, Mackie was born in the same year as her half-brother Sea Hero won the Kentucky Derby. On her first foray into the sale ring, as a foal at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, she was sold for $550,000.

Trained by Elliott Walden during her racing career, she won the Grade 3 Busher Stakes at Aqueduct and finished third, behind My Flag, in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at three. In total, she won three of her eight starts for earnings of over $150,000.

Offered in foal to Unbridled's Song at the 2006 Tattersalls November sale, she again gave her connections a big payday, when knocked down to John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed for 1.6 million guineas.

Six of the nine foals produced by Mackie were winners, including US Grade 2 winner Mr Mellon (Red Ransom), the Brian Meehan-trained Solario Stakes third Danebury Hill (Danehill), and Japanese Group winner Seeking The Best (Seeking The Gold).
