Whateleys win bumper with Milan gelding

DIANA WHATELEY and her husband Grahame, associated with top jumpers such as Menorah and Captain Chris, saw their colours in the Ludlow winner's enclosure on Wednesday with a horse trained by Anabel King, wife of bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy's.

Third on his debut at Huntingdon, Real Milan went one better under Richie McLernon. The six-year-old son of Milan changed hands once at auction for €17,500 as a foal. Bred by Vincent and Jimmy Lawler, he is out of the unraced The Real Athlete, herself by Presenting out of a half-sister to Grand National hero Royal Athlete.

Murphy has bought many top horses for the Whateleys, who are major players atthe jumps sale ring. Captain Chris, by King's Theatre out of high-class 2m chaser Function Dream, cost €250,000 as a store, while £175,000 Nicene Creed was another high-profile purchase.
