Raven's Pass is off the mark at stakes level

DARLEY'S Raven's Pass became the latest first-season sire to celebrate a debut success at stakes level when Steeler justified favouritism to land the Listed Peter Willett Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday.

The Mark Johnston trainee led home a one-two for freshman stallions with the runner-up Tamayuz Star continuing a good run for his sire Tamayuz, which saw Meiner Eternal become the Derrinstown Stud resident's first Group winner in the Kokura Nisai Stakes on Sunday.

Bred by Airlie Stud, Steeler is out of the 12-year-old Darshaan mare
Discreet Brief, winner of the Park Hill Stakes in the colours of
Airlie's Sonia Rogers. Discreet Brief's dam Quiet Counsel is a half-sister to Yorkshire Oaks winner Key Change, also by Darshaan.

Sold for 35,000gns as a foal and then 80,000gns the following year
when knocked down to his trainer, Steeler was beaten a head on debut by subsequent Ripon Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy winner Deauville Prince before winning his maiden at Glorious Goodwood and finishing less than a length behind Dundonnell in the Acomb Stakes.

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Raven's Pass was a decent two-year-old
himself, breaking the juvenile track record when winning the Group 3
Solario Stakes at Sandown in 2007. His daughter Lovely Pass got him
off the mark with his first winner on May 26 and followed up with a
third-place finish in the Chesham Stakes - a race which saw the first
three home all sired by first-season sires, with winner Tha'Ir being
by Raven's Pass's fellow Darley sire New Approach and runner-up Cruck Realta by Norman Court Stud's Sixties Icon.

Raven's Pass is  tied with Tamayuz on the first-crop sires'
table by number of winners. They have seven winners apiece while
runaway leader Sakhee's Secret has 14 and Sixties Icon is on nine.
