RACHEL Alexandra, the 2009 American Horse of the Year, has been announced as in foal to Bernardini.

The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro produced her first foal, a colt by Curlin, on January 22.

The announcement that the six-year-old is in foal was made by owner Stonestreet Farm in a Twitter message that read: "We are thrilled to report that Rachel Alexandra is confirmed to be in foal to Bernardini!"

Rachel Alexandra was a brilliant filly, winning the 2009 Kentucky Oaks by 20 lengths, after which she became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness Stakes. The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was also successful in the Mother Goose Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Woodward Stakes.

Bernardini is the sire of the first foal out of the 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta. The son of A P Indy stands at Darley's Jonabell Farm for $150,000.
