Prominent American breeder Humphrey dies

LOUISE Humphrey, the part breeder of Kentucky Derby hopeful Gemologist, died on Sunday at her home in Miccosukee, Florida. She was 93.

Humphrey's highlight as an owner and breeder came when Victory Ride, a daughter of Seeking The Gold campaigned with her son G. Watts Humphrey Jr., won the 2001 Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga.

Gemologist, a son of Tiznow, won last season's Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and is a live fancy for the Kentucky Derby after taking his return, an allowance at Gulfstream Park, by seven lengths last week.

Other stakes winners bred by Humphrey include Grade 3 scorers Baletti and Ravel.
