AT Wetherby on Boxing Day the Paul Nicholls-trained Nozic under jockey Harry Skelton galloped his rivals into the ground in the 3m1f Grade 3 Rowland Merrick Chase beating the 2008 Arkle winner Tidal Bay by 7l.

Nozic is a French-bred by Port Lyautey, a son of Shirley Heights who finished seventh inKahyasi's Irish Derby.

He is the first known foal out of his dam, Grizilh, a daughter of the Nonoalco mare Spoleto. She is a half-sister to the former Nicky Henderson-trained Juveigneur (Funny Baby), who finished second in the Betfred Gold Cup Handicap Chase, the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup Handicap Chase and the William Hill Handicap Chase at Cheltenham Festival. He is now point-to-pointing in Ireland having won his first two starts through the autumn of 2008.

Grizilh also has a dual winner by Grand Tresor in France called Orpailleur, as well as a Funny Baby four-year-old gelding called Quairabas, a two-year-old filly named Stencil as well as yearling filly by Persian Ruler and a colt foal named Udhu, one of 13 2008 foals registered by Little Rock. His first crop will be three-year-olds in 2009.
