Son of Grade 1 heroine Gaviola off the mark

GAVIOLA, winner of the Grade 1 Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap at Belmont Park in 2000, was represented by her second winner when her three-year-old son Planetary Motion got off the mark at the third attempt in a 1m2f maiden stakes at Lingfield Park today.

She was sold at the 2004 Keeneland Novemberbreeding stock sale to ClassicStar LLC for $1.9 million, and is the dam of three runners including the two-year-old Unbridle's Dream, a winner in Canada. Her 2003 Storm Cat filly was sold as a three-year-old for $500,000.

A son of Gone West, Planetary Motion was purchased by John Ferguson for $750,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Trained by Mark Johnston for Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, he had shown little promise when beaten 24 lengths over a mile on his first start at Nottingham, and beaten 15 lengths over 7f at Lingfield on his second start, both in October.

Confederate, the runner-up behind Planetary Motion in today's race, also has a Group/Grade 1-winning ancestress as he is a maternal grandson of Irish and Yorkshire Oaks heroine Pure Grain.
