Perfect ground but filthy weather for breeze-up

THE breeze-up circus moves on this week to Newmarket for the Tattersalls Craven Sale, the sale company's flagship juvenile auction whick kicks off its two-day run on Wednesday evening at 6pm.

With filthy weather descending on Newmarket from dawn on Monday, the traditional  breeze on the Rowley Mile was played out in front of a core group of participants, among them agents and trainers such as John Ferguson, Ross Doyle and members of the Rabbah team.

So bad was the weather that a number of prospective buyers were content to view the televised action under cover in the stands while a few brave souls - far fewer than the norm - took their annual positions nearer to the action on the far side of the course. Approximately 160 two-year-olds went through their paces.

The ground was described as perfect by consignor Emma O'Gorman, who sends four two-year-olds to this year's sale including a sharp colt by Kheleyf (114) and a Duke Of Marmalade grandson of German champion Filia Ardross (101).

"The ground was perfect on the breeze-up strip which was a relief because of how dry Newmarket was a week or ten days ago - the rain came just at the right time.," she said. "It was a little bit quiet at the practice breeze on Monday but then it wasn't that different to last year.

"Hopefully we have something for everybody and they're a straightforward bunch - our Cape Cross colt (102) is a nice, scopey horse who has a pedigree and the Kheleyf if a really nice colt who's quite forward."

Although last year's sale average fell 11 per cent to 71,313gns, the auction has maintained its position as a leader in its field by producing an average in excess of 70,000gns every year since 2006. Last year's top price of 320,000gns was paid by Sir Robert Ogden for a Distorted Humor colt, Tales Of Grimm, who won his only start last season and could take his chance in Saturday's Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

With the prospect of increased international participation, especially from Hong Kong, at this year's edition, Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George is hopeful of another solid renewal.

"We're expecting a good cross-section of international buyers," he said. "Japanese owner Chika Racing bought a Manduro colt for 110,000gns here last year called Sound Manduro which recently won at Hanshin and they have come back. Sean Woods is also here from Hong Kong as is Australian agent Jeff Gordon.

"There has always been interest in this sale from Japanese buyers but you'd have to say that interest from Hong Kong is greater than in previous years."

Hillwood Bonus chance

Lot 19 in the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, a son of Mount Nelson consigned by Hillwood Stud, will be offered with the potential to win a £20,000 bonus.

In addition to being qualified for the Racing Post Yearling Bonus he was also the winner of the £10,000  Newsells Golden Bonus from the stud's  DBS Premier Yearling Sale draft.

Charlie Vigors of Hillwood Stud said:  "Despite having never won anything in a raffle before we felt it right to sell Newsells Park's generousbonus with the horse when he was re offered. This is a unique opportunity for his purchaser to cover their year's training fees if he were to win a Racing Post Yearling Bonus Race.  He is a good moving, scopey individual who won't be early but should make a lovely 7 furlong to mile type in the latter half of the season and progress from there."

Hillwood will also be offering colts by Cape Cross, Danehill Dancer and Oasis Dream as well as a brace of fillies by Ifraaj and Royal Applause at the Craven sale.

Vigors added: "We had a deliberate change in policy last year to move away from predominantly American bred horses with whom we had little luck.  On the evidence of their home work itappears to have been the right decision."
