THE valuable feature race at Leopardstown, the Pierse Hurdle, was won by Penny's Bill, a son of Rashar, who just held off the late challenge of the race favourite Psycho.

The winner had originally been 6lb out of the handicap, but, following the defection of top-weight Newmill on Sunday morning, the weights were raised 8lb as the alternative handicap rule came into play, which meant Penny's Bill racedoff 9st 12lb instead of 9st 10lb. He was sent off a 50-1 shot.

Rashar, a son of Alleged, who stood at Blackhall Stud, was put down through the winter of 2007. His best progeny include the Len Lungo-trained Rasharrow who finished fourth in both the Listed Jewson Novices Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the Champion Novices Chase at Ayr in 2007. His three and four-year-old averaged 2,033gns and 5,309gns in 2008.

Penny's Bill is a brother to Save The Bacon, runner-up in the 2008 renewal of Fairyhouse's Listed Handicap Hurdle. His dam Classic Wave, a daughter of Orchestra, was unraced.

A delighted winning trainer Elizabeth Doyle said: "That's by far my biggest win.

"I've been struggling with the health of the horses recently and had very few runners lately, but this horse ran well here at Christmas and I felt if he came on from that he'd be competitive.

"I used to work for Pat Hughes who won this race twice and it gives a great chance for a relatively ordinary horse to win a big pot."

Unsold at Tattersalls Ireland three times, Penny's Bill was successfully sold for €2,700 at Goresbridge as a yearling.
