Mon Mome breaks French-bred hoodoo

One hundredyears after the last French-bred horse won the Grand National, the Venetia Williams-trained Mon Mome made up for lost time when becoming the country's second winner of the 4m4f race.

The nine-year-old, who carried 11st and at 100-1 become the biggest-priced winner since Foinavon in 1967, crept quietly into contention and with two to jump was among a group of a dozen horses still in contention.

Grabbing the lead from last year's winner Comply Or Die after the last fence,  he surged clear up the run-in.

Mon Mome's victory meant Williams became only the second-ever female trainer to saddle a National winner after Jenny Pitman and Royal Athlete in 1995.

Treadwell, celebrating by far the biggest win of his career, said: "It's an absolutely unbelievable finish, I had the perfect run through the race, he jumped brilliant for me.

"It hasn't sunk in yet, all I can say at this moment in time is itis unbelievable. I had a quick look round but I wasn't really sure how far in front I was."

Williams has enjoyed one of the best seasons of her career, including a double at the Cheltenham Festival, and said: "How can you ever expect that in a race like this?

"It was just unbelievable, the owner was watching the wrong horse for the first part of the race and she thought it was out the back.

"I'm so proud of the horse. I'm so proud of Liam for giving him such a good ride, and the girl who looks after him as well.

"I'm so proud of everyone in the yard - I never get chance to praise them and give them the credit they deserve, it is all a team effort."

Bought out of France after winning one race, Mon Mome is the first foal out of the New Target mare Etoile du Lion. She has had just four foals which include one winner in France, an unraced four-year-old called Roi Mome by Saint Cyrien and a two-year-old by Sleeping Car called Tokyo Javilex.

Passing Sale's best performance as a racehorse was when successful in the 1m4f Group 1 Gran Premio Del Jockey Club as a four-year-old.  He stands at Haras d'Isse in the west of France.
