Big Audio gives Oratorio first stakes success

Saturday: Chesham Stakes (Listed) 2yo 7f

BIG Audio gave triple Group 1 winner Oratorio his first stakes winneron Saturday afternoon when narrowly defeating Emperor Claudius in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

It was also a first success for the Richard Hannon-trained colt, thereby providing Oratorio with his fourth individual first crop winner in Britain and Ireland. Coolmore's son of Danehill, who stands for €17,500, was also represented by the fourth home, Beethoven, who looked sure to play a big hand in proceedings before tiring late.

Bred by Stephen Sullivanin Ireland, Big Audio was a 30,000gns pinhook as a foal by John Osborne, who re-sold him as a yearling for £87,000 at the DBS St Leger Sale.

He is the second foal out of Tarbela, a placed Grand Lodge daughter of the Irish 1,000 Guineas third Tarwiya.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Emperious Claudius - the first foal out of 1,000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters - made significant late headway to finish a head adrift of the winner. The son of Giant's Causeway owns a fascinating sales history having been knocked down for just $35,000 to Hoby Kight as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale. He was a last minute withdrawal at the Goffs Kempton Breeze Up earlier this year.

Close up in third was Party Doctor, who was bidding to give his sire, Dr Fong, a third consecutive success in the race.
