New stakes winner for veteran Night Shift

Grand Prix Anjou Bretagne (Listed), Nantes, 1m

PARTNER SHIFT (4yo b g Night Shift - What A Picture,
by Peintre Celebre)

Breeder: Kenilworth House Stud, Ireland

COOLMORE'S retired stalwart sire Night Shift was represented by a new stakes winner on Monday when his four-year-old son Partner Shift gained his first black type by landing the Listed Grand Prix AnjouBretagne over 1m at Nantes.

In a thrillingly tight finish, Partner Shift edged out German Group 2-winning miler Forthe Millionkiss (by Dashing Blade) by a short head, with 10-year-old Krataios (Sabrehill), winner of the Group 2 Prix du Muguet in 2006, a head back in third.

This was a career-best effort from Partner Shift, who had been soundly beaten on his previous two attempts in Listed company. Now trained by Henri-Alex Pantall, he began his career in training with Ed Dunlop in Britain, where he finished second in a Wolverhampton maiden at two.

Bred in Ireland by Kenilworth House Stud, Partner Shift is out of the Peintre Celebre mare What A Picture. He was sold as a foal to Agence FIPS for 38,000gns at the Tattersalls December sale, and resold to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 100,000gns at the Arqana August sale in the following year.

He is a half-brother to this year's Feilden Stakes fifth Mufarrh (Marju), and his dam is a half-sister to Group 1 Gran Criterium winner Night Style (also by Night Shift). Further back this is the family of Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow.

Night Shift -now 30 years old - stood his last season at Coolmore in 2008, when he covered three mares. His Group 1-winning progeny include Azamour (a promising young sire himself), Lochangel and In The Groove. He is also exerting his influence through his daughters, who have produced the likes of Dandy Man, Etlaala, Nordic Truce and Sundrop.
