Shakespearean scores in Solario for Shamardal

SHAKESPEAREAN became the first Group winner and second northern-hemisphere black-type scorer for first-season sire Shamardal when landing a tenacious victory in today's Solario Stakes at Sandown Park.

The colt, who is trained by Mark Johnston (who also oversaw Shamardal's juvenile career), made virtually all the running, with runner-up Buzzword and third-placed Dubawi Phantom emerging from the pack but never looking like winning.

Shakespearean was bred by Nicholas and Catherine Hartery's Caherass Stud in Croom, County Limerick, out of the 11-year-old Priolo mare Paimpolaise, a half-sister to French Group 3 winner Pont-Aven, later dam of Gimcrack Stakes hero and sire Josr Algarhoud.

John Ferguson purchased him for €80,000 at the Goffs Million Sale, and next month's Goffs Million Mile and Goffs Million Sprint feature among the colt's entries, along with the Dewhurst and the Racing Post Trophy in October.

Shamardal, winner of the Dewhurst, Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix du Jockey-Club and St James's Palace Stakes, has had ten winners from his first nothern-hemisphere crop of juveniles, including impressive Grangecon Stud Stakes scorer Arctic.
