Kayf Aramis (Kayf Tara-Ara (Birthright))

DARLEY stallion Kayf Tara, whose reputation as a jumps sire has blossomed in recent seasons, notched up a new achievement today when Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle hero Kayf Aramis provided him with his first winner at the Cheltenham Festival.

Kayf Aramis, who is trained by Venetia Williams, also provided his young jockey Aidan Coleman with his first Festival victory.

The seven-year-old gelding was bred by his owner Isobel Phipps Coltman out of the 19-year-old Birthright mare Ara, and was formerly a three-time winning handicapper on the Flat for John Spearing.

A son of Sadler's Wells, Kayf Tara was bred by Meon Valley Stud and is a grandson of that farm's illustrious broodmare, Reprocolor. His brother Opera House was a triple Group 1 winner and his half-sister Zee Zee Top won the Prix de l'Opera.

Purchased by Sheikh Mohammed as a yearling for210,000gns, Kayf Tara developed into one of the best stayers of the late 1990s, winning both the Ascot Gold Cup and the Irish St. Leger twice.

Retired to Overbury Stud in 2001, his oldest progeny are only seven years old (Kayf Aramis is a member of his first foal crop), but they have done a fine job of advertising their sire's credentials as a source of jumping talent.

His other runners include Tuesday's Arkle Chase third Planet Of Sound and the Grade 2 winners MadMax, Kornati Kid, Carruthers and Clan Tara.

On the back of the good first impressions his young progeny made over jumps, Overbury Stud raised Kayf Tara's fee from £2,500 to £4,500 this year.

Mares due to visit him this season include Absalom's Lady, Chomba Womba, Carole's Crusader and Lady Rolfe, dam of Feathard Lady.
