Outstanding Moyglare mare Market Slide dies

MARKET Slide, an outstanding producer for Moyglare Stud Farm who bred Refuse To Bend and Media Puzzle, died earlier this week, a few days after foaling a Montjeu filly. She was 21.

By Gulch and out of Moyglare foundation mare Grenzen, a Grade 2 winner acquired by Walter Haefner in 1979, Market Slide won two races for Dermot Weld including the famous "Scurry" sprint Handicap at the Curragh in 1994 under Willie Carson. She later made an impression in the US, winning a further three races and running placed at Grade 3 level.

Sent to Theatrical in her first year at stud, Market Slide bred the popular stayer Media Puzzle who became the second of Dermot Weld's two Melbourne Cup winners when successful in the colours of Michael Smurfit in 2002. The gelding won seven races in all, the European highlight being the 2006 Saval Beg Stakes.

Market Slide's third foal, Refuse To Bend, placed the mare within an elite group of dual Group 1 producers. Also trained by Weld, the son of Sadler's Wells won the National Stakes at two and became Moyglare's first English Classic winner in 2003 when successful in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Later sold to Godolphin, he went on to win the Queen Anne and Eclipse Stakes before siring the outstanding filly Sarafina during a relatively short career at stud.

Market Slide is also the dam of the Group 2-placed Domestic Fund and last season's Listed-placed colt Notable Graduate among her nine foals that have raced to date. She has a two-year-old colt by Montjeu named Make The News in training with Dermot Weld.

Moyglare Stud has retained two Sadler's Wells daughters of the mare in Genuine Charm and Key Secure.
