Outstanding Curlin off the mark in Britain

TWO-TIME American Horse of the Year Curlin was represented by his first British winner on Friday evening when Savanna La Mar easily broke her maiden over 7f at Chester.

The filly, who ran second on her debut at Kempton, made all under Chris Catlin to score by three-and-a-half lengths. Owner Kirsten Rausing and trainer Sir Mark Prescott were winning the event for the second consecutive year, having sent out subsequent Listed winner Kinetica to win in 2011.

Bred by Kirsten Rausing, Savanna La Mar is the first foal out of Soft Morning, a daughter of Pivotal whom Prescott trained to win the Listed Prix Petite Etoile at Deauville. She is a half-sister to the Group 3-winning two-year-old Songerie and Listed winners Souvenance and Sourire, and from the famous Lanwades family of Petoski.

Soft Morning has a yearling filly by Curlin's sire Smart Strike and a filly foal by Hernando.

Savanna La Mar becomes the third winner for Curlin following Russian scorers Zimniy Dvorets and Lucky First. The son of Smart Strike, who won seven Grade 1 races including the Preakness Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic, stands for $40,000 at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky.
