Breeder: Eugene O'Leary in Ireland

OSCARS WELL marked himself down as an exciting young hurdler with an easy victory in the Navan Novice Hurdle on Saturday.

The Jessica Harrington-trained gelding was settled behind the leaders until two furlongs from home, when making smooth progress to take up the lead.

He kept on strongly to pass the line eight lengths in front of runner-up Sweet Shock, a German-bred son of Sholokhov, with Fully Funded, an American-bred son of Aptitude, making it a cosmopolitan tricast by finishing third.

On his first start in a black-type event, Oscars Well becomes his sire Oscar's tenth Grade 1 winner. It has been a banner year for Oscar, with Big Zeb scoring in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and Peddlers Cross extending his unbeaten record in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle and the Fighting Fifth Hurdle.

A 16-year-old son of Sadler's Wells and brother to 1990 Derby runner-up Blue Stag, Oscar stands under the Coolmore National Hunt banner at a €5,000 fee.

Oscars Well is out of the unraced mare Placid Willow, a daughter of high-class hurdler Convinced.

He has to go down as an inspired purchase each time he was sold at Tattersalls Ireland - for €5,000 as a yearling to Gerard Lowry, for €13,500 later in hisyearling season to Tom Keating and for €8,000 to J. Linehan as a three-year-old - as he is the first horse with any black type under his first three dams.

Digging deeper in the pedigree you do find jumps stars, as this is thewider family of Grand National hero Red Marauder and dual Champion Chase scorer Royal Relief.
