O'Ryan receives Willie Stephenson Award

AGENT Bobby O'Ryan, a prolific buyer at all levels of the market, was a popular recipient of the Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy at DBS on Monday.

The award, which honours the company's co-founder and first chairman, is awarded to the person felt to have done the most to promote DBS in the course of their business that year.

O'Ryan is a regular at each bloodstock sale in Britain and Ireland and has tasted high-profile success under both codes as the buyer of Anglo-Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel for 30,000gns at the 2005 DBS St Leger Sale and top-class novice hurdler Boston Bob for £150,000 at the 2011 DBS Newbury Festival Sale.

In his presentation to O'Ryan, DBS managing director Henry Beeby described the agent as "a friend to DBS and everyone in the industry, and someone who is active at every sale and all levels of the industry".

The award came as a surprise to O'Ryan, who was outside on the phone to a client while Beeby was singing his praises.

"Obviously I'm very honoured," said O'Ryan. "I've had a lot of success here. The two Group 1 winners - Cockney Rebel and Wootton Bassett - stand out and Boston Bob looks very good."

Asked what attracted him to Cockney Rebel and Wootton Bassett as yearlings, O'Ryan said: "I tend not to look at pedigree, just the individuals and they were both cracking horses. Once I've found a horse that I like, the hope is that it will be affordable!"

Beeby added: ‘I am delighted that the DBS board has chosen to recognise the outstanding efforts of Bobby O'Ryan by awarding him the Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy in 2011. He has been a great supporter of every sale at all levels for as long as anyone can remember.

"His enthusiasm is infectious and he is always a positive influence at any DBS sale - I cannot think of a more deserving winner of this award and I have been overwhelmed by the number of DBS clients who have since congratulated myself and the DBS team for presenting the award to Bobby for 2011."
