Debussy half-sister wins on debut at Saint-Cloud

ONE of the best-bred members of Iffraaj’s highflying first crop won on her debut at Saint-Cloud on Monday.

Kildangan Stud-based Iffraaj sired a record-breaking 38 individual two-year-old winners in his first season with progeny last year and he did it without the assistance of Lyrique, a half-sister to 2010 Arlington Million scorer Debussy.

Lyrique landed the 1m Prix Calandria, for maiden three-year-old fillies, by one and a half lengths from Sandy's Charm, a daughter of Footstepsinthesand.

Lyrique is trained by Andre Fabre and her jockey Maxime Guyon sported the maroon and white silks of her owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed.

She is the third foal produced by the Singspiel mare Opera Comique, a 1m1f winner on her debut at two and third-placed to Venturi in the Group 3 C. L. Weld Park Stakes on her other run that season. She was retired after three unplaced efforts in stakes company at three.

Opera Comique’s first foal, Debussy, by Diesis, has won five races including the Epsom Blue Riband Trial, in which he took the notable scalp of Midday, the Huxley Stakes and the Arlington Million.

The mare’s second foal, Lightening Stricks, by King’s Best, was sold by Darley and is trained in County Kildare by Richard Brabazon. Lightening Stricks won a 1m maiden at Dundalk in December by seven lengths on his fifth career start.

Opera Comique is a half-sister to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes hero Belmez and to Listed Ulster Harp Derby winner Dowland. She is out of Lingfield Oaks Trial runner-up Grace Note, who is in turn a half-sister to Listed scorer Forward Lass and to Gracefully, the dam of Prix de Diane winner Lypharita.

Lyrique becomes the 43rd individual winner from Iffraaj's first northern-hemisphere crop.
