Scat Daddy colt tops OBS March opening session

TUESDAY’S first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training in Florida was topped by a first-crop son of Johannesburg stallion Scat Daddy.

The colt, consigned by Old South Farm as agent, was sold to Japanese buyer K.K. Eishindo for $400,000. He is out of the Tale Of The Cat mare Madagascat, a half-sister to Graded stakes winner Lindsay Jean, and he had completed a furlong in 9.8secs, the joint-fastest work during Friday’s under-tack show.

Eishindo also signed for an $85,000 Half Ours colt and an $80,000 Johannesburg filly. There had been doubts whether Japanese buyers would attend the auction with the country still in turmoil after Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.

Exciting US three-year-old colt Uncle Mo’s trainer Todd Pletcher went to $380,000 to secure a first-crop son of Street Sense out of Regally Appealing, winner of the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes at two. The bay colt, who breezed a furlong in 10secs, was bought for Uncle Mo’s owner Repole Stable.

Repole also paid $325,000 for a colt by Uncle Mo’s sire Indian Charlie and out of the unraced Storm Creek mare Eva’s Melody. The horse was a $70,000 vendor buy-back at Keeneland September.

Seven horses in the opening session sold for $300,000 or more.

This year’s OBS two-year-old in training sale was restructured into one larger sale, combining previous years’ February and March Select Sales.

With an expanded catalogue this year, 117 horses were sold for turnover of $10,322,000, up 27 per cent on the $8,126,000 spent on 84 horses in last year’s March opening session. This year’s average price was $88,222, 9 per cent down on last year, and the median was $57,000, down 19 per cent.

The percentage of buy-backs was 31.1 per cent, the same as last year. Thirty-one horses sold for $100,000 or more, compared with 29 a year ago.

The March Sale ends on Wednesday with a session starting at 11:00am local time.
