O'Byrne lands Galileo colt for 400,000gns

THE third foal out of Prix Saint-Alary heroine Ask For The Moon is the new top lot of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale after selling to Demi O'Byrne for 400,000gns.

Auctioneer Simon Kerrins was forced to open the bidding at 40,000gns for the strapping January-born son of Galileo, but it didn't take long for the colt to become the subject of a duel between Eugene McDermott of Kennycourt Stud and O'Byrne.

McDermott appeared determined to get the colt, rapidly firing back bids in 20,000gns increments until O'Byrne bid 380,000gns. After some hesitation, McDermott went to 390,000gns, but O'Byrne - standing with David Nagle and M. V. Magnier - needed no encouragement to make it a round 400,000gns.

Consigned by Jockey Hall Stud, the colt is the third foal out of Ask For The Moon, who is catalogued as lot 1586 at next week's Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

Several minutes later, McDermott again came off second best, this time for a Shamardal colt from the family of Kirklees who was knocked down to Shadwell Estates for 190,000gns.

With approximately 35 lots still to sell, the day's average is running six per cent above last year's figure at 53,942gns.
