Naaqoos to stand at Haras du Mezeray

NAAQOOS, winner of last year's Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, will stand alongside Muhtathir at Haras du Mezeray next season at a fee of €6,000.

Winner of three of his seven lifetime starts, Naaqoos began his career with an easy win in a maiden event at Deauville in August. He ended his two year old season on a high when winning the Jean-Luc Lagardere by a neck with Mastercraftsman back in fourth.

Although Naaqoos failed to reach the winner's enclosure this year, he started off the season with a head second to subsequent Prix du Jockey-Club winner Le Havre in the ListedPrix Djebel.

The colt then finished third in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, although he was later placed fifth after causing interference.

Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan, said yesterday:  "He was very fast and precocious at two and always had the makings of being a very nice three year old.

"He did himself no favours in the Poulains after pulling very hard in the early stages and ran a remarkable race in the circumstances to stay on to be third. He then had a rushed preparation before the Maurice de Gheest and we have now run out of time as it is the end of the season so Sheikh Hamdan took the decision to retire him."

Speaking from his Chantilly base, Naaqoos' trainer Freddy Head said: "He had a beautiful action, a lot of speed and was very good looking. The colt was brilliant at two and I thought he was unlucky at three."

Bred by Serge Boucheron, Naaqoos was purchased at the Arqana August Yearling Sales by Shadwell Estates for €280,000. The colt will be the first son of Oasis Dream to stand in France, who is currently equal fourth on the leading sires list.

A half-brother to Group 3 Prix la Force winner Barastraight, Naaqoos hails from the Ballymacoll family of Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Gaily.
