Monitor Closely to stand at stud in France

MONITOR CLOSELY, winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes in 2009, will begin his stud career at the Haras de la Barbottiere, an arm of the Haras de la Hetraie, in France next year.

Despite being a son of champion sprinter Oasis Dream, Monitor Closely excelled in middle distance contests.

Trained by Michael Bell for Lawrie Inman, he won a 1m maiden at two and easily beat Mastery in the Great Voltigeur at three, although the tables were turned in the St Leger, which was won by Master with Monitor Closely third.

He failed to win from six starts at four or five but did manage a third in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

Monitor Closely was bred by Cliveden Stud from one of its best families: his dam is Sun Chariot Stakes winner Independence, making him a half-brother to Eclipse scorer Mount Nelson. It is also the family of Derby hero Reference Point.

Monitor Closely will stand alongside Apsis and Great Pretender at Barbottiere at a fee of €2,000.
