WAS (f Galileo - Alluring Park by Green Desert)

Bred by Lodge Park Stud in Ireland

AT 1.2 million guineas, Was topped the 2010 Tattersalls October Sale and was the dearest yearling sold at public auction in Europe that year. However, her neck victory in Friday's Investec Oaks over Shirocco Star means that she has more than justified that outlay while adding further lustre to a family which previously hit the heights through Derby hero New Approach.

As her price-tag suggests, Was owns a pedigree out of the top drawer to match her physique. By the outstanding Coolmore stallion Galileo, she is a half-sister to three winners including the Listed Washington Singer Stakes scorer Janood (by Medicean) and out of Alluring Park, a Listed-placed sprinter who is a sister to the high-class Japanese sprinter Shinko Forest. She is also a half-sister to champion and 2008 Derby hero New Approach (by Was' sire Galileo) and the 1999 Irish Champion Stakes runner-up Dazzling Park, who is the granddam of Phoenix Stakes winner Alfred Nobel.

This is a family which has been cultivated to great effect by Seamus Burns of Lodge Park Stud, who purchased Alluring Park's dam, the 1986 Phoenix Champion Stakes winner Park Express, as a yearling through John Warren for 42,000gns. The daughter of Ahonoora was a half-sister to Firth Of Clyde scorer Myra's Best and a granddaughter of Epsom Listed winner Lachine.

Was is the 28th Group 1 winner by Galileo and his fifth this year following Frankel, Golden Lilac, Igugu and Niwot. However, perhaps surprisingly, Was is his first Epsom Oaks winner.

Alluring Park has a yearling sister to Was, who is likely to be offered by Lodge Park Stud at this year's Tattersalls October Sale.

A full pedigree analysis of all Friday's Group winners will appear in the results section of Saturday's Racing Post
