Newsells Park stallion Osorio dead

NEWSELLS Park Stud has announced that Osorio has died following an accident in his paddock. The son of Surumu was nine years old.

Bred by Gestut Fahrhof, Osorio was campaigned in Italy at two and three by Newsells Park, winning his maiden as a juvenile by eight lengths. His biggest career victory came the following season when he beat Private Charter and Lundy's Lane to land the Italian Derby. He was the top-rated Italian three-year-old of that year.

He was initially retired to stand at the Haras de Piencourt in France, and became the first stallion to stand at Newsells Park when transferred to the Hertfordshire stud in 2007. His first crop are two-year-olds this year.

Osorio was out of Ocotal, a Listed-winner and runner-up in the Group 2 Schwarzgold-Rennen (1,000 Guineas).  She was a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Obando, also a son of Sumuru, and twoother black-type performers. Osorio's grand-dam, Ocana, was successful in the Schwarzgold-Rennen, which was listed as a Group 3 in 1978.

The farm's general manager Julian Dollar said: "Osorio was a wonderfully kind and good natured horse, and everyone here at Newsells is understandably sad and deflated about the news."

"Osorio was a great favourite of the stud's owners Mr and Mrs Jacobs, and it was a very special moment for them and Newsells Park Stud when they were in Rome to see him win the Italian Derby a few years ago.

"He has left some lovely youngsters behind however, so we hope one or two of his sons or daughters will fly the flag for him."
