New equine insurance service launched

GLOBAL insurance company Markel International Ltd launched their equine division at Goodwood today. The division will cover all risks of mortality, theft, infertility and specified perils.

To mark the occasion, the London-based company sponsored the fifth race on today's card at Goodwood, the Markel International Maiden Fillies' Stakes over 6f. Company senior underwriter Juliet Redfern, who has spent over 15 years specialising in bloodstock insurance, presented the trophy to the winning connections.

The London team are headed by Julian Bowen-Rees, who gained experience dealing with valuable bloodstock during his time as deputy underwriter on a small specialist syndicate at Lloyds and then as part of a large multi-national insurance company.

"We are delighted to have attracted such a high-calibre team and look forward to them providing versatile and innovative products," said William Stovin, president and chief operating officer of Markel International.

"We can tailor our products to individual requirements, which is ideal for today's market because all-risk coverage is not possible for some people. With many racehorse owners trying to reduce their costs, insurance providers need to be adaptable. We offer flexibility and the option of limited coverage at the appropriate price."

Redfern added: "Thanks to Markel's stability and industry rating, we can offer the right sort of coverage and customer service for all parties, from private horse owners up to the largest stud farms."
