Dam of US champion Ginger Punch dead

NAPPELON, the dam of 2007 us champion Ginger Punch, died on Tuesday in Kentucky. At the time of her death, the 18-year-old daughter of Bold Revenue was carrying a foal by Henrythenavigator, which also died.

Nappelon, who won 17 races including a Grade 2 from 70 starts, was purchased by Beth Ann Brown-Gambone for just $15,000 at the 2006 Keeneland January Sale. At the time, she was the dam of two winners from five foals of racing age. However, that was about to change with the emergence of her then three-year-old, Ginger Punch.

Frank Stronach's daughter of Awesome Again progressed markedly with age, taking the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff, Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap and the Grade 1 Go for Wand Handicap en route to championship honours as a four-year-old in 2007.

She returned the following year to win a second renewal ofthe Go For Wand Handicap as well as the  Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap and Grade 1 Personal Ensign Handicap. She retired as the winner of $3,065,603 in earnings.

Ginger Punch was one of three winners out of Nappelon, whose youngest progeny is a two-year-old Leroidesanimaux colt that was sent to Turkey.
