Jessica Harrington appointed stud director

JESSICA Harrington and Dr Sean Brady have been appointed directors of the Irish National Stud, filling the vacanciesof John Osborne, who has stepped up to chief executive, and Pat O'Kelly, who resigned last year.

Brendan Smith, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said the pair "brought a wealth of business and bloodstock experience and expertise from both inside and outside the industry," and that he was "confident their backgrounds and experiences would be of considerable benefit to the stud."

Brady is a former chief executive of the Irish Sugar Company, interim chief executive of the Irish Dairy Board, and is currently chairman of the ministry of agriculture's  2020 Strategy Committee, set up to devise a long-term strategy for the agri-food, forestry and fisheries sectors.

As well as being a successful Flat and jumps trainer, Harrington, best known for her achievements with Moscow Flyer, isalso a patron of the Irish Horse Welfare Trust.

Smith added: "The board had been asked, as a matter of urgency, to review the company's financial situation and to take such decisions as are necessary to ensure that the stud is placed on a sustainable financial footing and that its future financial situation is secured."
