THE dual Group 1 winner Mount Nelson is to stand at Newsells Park Stud for the 2009 breeding season. A fee has not yet been announced.
As a juvenile, Mount Nelson won the Group 1 Criterium International in a record time. Injury meant that the son of Rock Of Gibraltar ran only once at three, but he returned to action this season to finish third in the Prix Equidia, fifth in the Queen Anne before winning the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse. On his last start, he finished third in the Arlington Million. Newsells' general manager Julian Dollar said: "We are delighted to have acquired this talented racehorse to stand at Newsells Park Stud next season. We think he has all the ingredients to make him a great success at stud.
"Bred by Cliveden Stud, Mount Nelson is by a fantastic racehorse and now a major emerging sire in Rock of Gibraltar, out of a wonderful racemare in Independence by Selkirk who won boththe Sun Chariot and Matron Stakes. Mount Nelson is bred on the dynamic Danzig/Sharpen Up cross which has already produced successful young sires Danehill Dancer and Invincible Spirit."
Mount Nelson joins Osario at Newsells Park and represents further development of the stud as a stallion farm, a strategy planned by the late chairman Mr Klaus Jacobs who died in September.
"It was always Mr Jacobs' intention to stand stallions at Newsells Park Stud and offer breeders another independent option," said Dollar. "We identified Mount Nelson as an exciting prospect some time ago. This was one of the last matters upon which we consulted Mr Jacobs before he passed away and I think he would be very pleased to know we have fulfilled one of his objectives."
