Merchent Paddy (Moscow Society - Firion's Angel (Down The Hatch))
THE broodmare Firion's Angel (Down The Hatch) has not covered herself in glory if judged by her ability at producing racehorses - she is the dam of only one known runner from seven known foals. However, her one runner is a good one and Merchant Paddy, ason of Moscow Society, gained his first graded win from his first start at the level when winning the Grade 2 Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Novice Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday.
Although Firion's Angel's dam Le Agio and her other daughters have been more successful in getting progeny to the racecourse, her own and her daughter's offspring have achieved little in the way of success under Rules.
Her half-brother Firions Law had been the family star until the appearance of Merchent Paddy. He won Leopardstown's Listed Dennys Gold Medal Novice Chase in 1990 and was runner-up in the Champion Chase run at the same racecourse the following year.
Moscow Society covered 85 mares in 2007, his last year at stud, and had 44 lots go through the ring in 2008. His foals and yearlings averaged 4,500gns, his three-year-olds 14,340gns and his five-year-olds 7,865gns.
He finished the 2007-08 season in fifteenth place on the leading NH sire's list with 13 winners of 16 races and £235,613 earned in prize-money.
Merchent Paddy has been through the ring at Tattersalls Ireland Fairyhouse complex three times - as yearling when fetching €10,000 to a cash buyer, as a three -year-old when bought back in for €19,000 and as a four-year-old when purchased by Anne-Marie Byrnes for €20,000.
