More gloom on day five of Keeneland January

THE downturn which has affected sales throughout the Keeneland January sale showed no signs of abating in the fifth session on Friday.

Figures across the board took a body blow. Some 244 of the 289 horses offered sold for an aggregate $2,050,200, down 45.6 per cent on last year's fifth session when 239 horses sold for $3,766,400.

The average price of $8,402 was down 46.7 per cent on the average of $15,759 achieved in the same session last year. The median was down 47.1 per cent from $8,500 to $4,500.

The top price of the day was $60,000, given by Florida-based pinhooker Christy Whitman for a white Devil His Due yearling colt.

So far during the first five sessions of the six-day sale, the aggregate, average and median prices are all in excess of 50 per cent down on the same sale last year.
