Talwar wins Listed Trial for Acclamation

TALWAR, one of his sire Acclamation's super sextet of juvenile Group winners last year, kicked off his three-year-old season with a running-on victory in the Listed International Trial Stakes over 1m at Lingfield on Saturday.

Acclamation made a brilliant start to his studcareer, being crowned the champion European freshman of 2007 and getting Group 1 winners Dark Angel and Equiano.

But last year he went up another gear when his two-year-old crop, bred in the spring after he was champion first-season sire, yielding six Group winners: Alsindi, Angels Will Fall, Harbour Watch, Lilbourne Lad, Ponty Acclaim and Talwar.

The one question mark over Acclamation, himself a Group 2-winning sprinter by Royal Applause, is whether he will cut the mustard as a Classic sire. The way Talwar stayed on strongly to defeat Princess Alzain (Street Sense) at Lingfield gave hope that he could.

Talwar was bredby Philip and Jane Myerscough and is the first foal out of the winning Marju mare Moore's Melody, a sister to Listed Golden Fleece Stakes winner Bruges and a great-granddaughter of brilliant broodmare Doff The Derby.

Doff The Derby produced the outstanding Derby winner Generous and the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine Imagine, and her descendants include Group 1 winners Horatio Nelson and Moonlight Cloud.

Talwar was purchased by Willie Browne as a yearling for 140,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale.

Moore's Melody was bought by the Haras de Saint-Pair at Tattersalls' December breeding-stock sale in November for 260,000gns.
