Coolmore sires head Derby yearling entries

A total of 388 yearling entries have been received for the 2010 Derby with the big three  Coolmore sires - Montjeu, Galileo and Sadler's Wells - leading the way numerically.

Further,  72 of the yearlings entered are owed by either Sue Magnier, Derrick Smith or Michael Tabor. All bar four of those 72 are in training with Aiden O'Brien.

Montjeu is the most represented stallion with 32 yearlings entered and his joint Tattersalls October Sale-topping colts out of Vanishing Prairie and Danaskaya hold entries. Both fetched 650,000gns this autumn with the first being bought by Demi O'Byrne for Coolmore. Peter Doyle purchased Danaskaya's colt for the former Abba star Benny Andersson.

Other entries by the son of Sadler's Wells include a colt out of Magnificient Style, dam of Percussionist and Fillies' Mile winner Playful Act, who cost 230,00gns as a foal, a colt out My Emma and a bay colt out of Apache Star who cost Blandford Bloodstock 325,000gns at Tattersalls.

Galileo, sire of this year's Derby winner New Approach, is represented by just two less yearlings than his Coolmore stud-mate. His top-priced colt of 2008, a son of Olimpic Girl who was bought by Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm at the Arqana August Sale for 770,000gns, has been entered, along with his colt out of Epping who made 460,000gns at Tattersalls.

Sadler's Wells has 23 entries also including his best-priced yearling of 2008 - a colt out of By Charter, dam of First Charter and Private Charter, who cost John Magnier 500,000gns. A Sadler's Wells colt which is entered but who did not cause Magnier a significant purchasing outlay this autumn is his homebred colt out of the dual Oaks winner Ramruma. She herself cost Magnier 2.1 million guineas at the Tattersalls Breeding Stock Sale in 2005.

Other sires with double digit entries are Danehill Dancer (19), first-season sire Azamour (12), while Dynaformer, Selkirk and Tiger Hill each have 11 entries.

Kingmambo is represented by nine including John Ferguson's US$1 million Keeneland purchase out of Weekend In Seattle, Sheikh Hamdan's homebred colt out of the Oaks winner Eswarah, the Niarchos family's colt out of the dual Group 1 winner Chimes of Freedom and the Magnier-owned colt out of Sequoyah, a half-brother to Henrythenavigator.

Other young sires yet to have runners with entries include the US sire Ghostzapper, the Tweenhills Stud stallion Trade Fair and Overbury's Zafeen. All three have a sole entry. Darley's Dubawi and Shamardal are both represented by four and eight entries apiece.

Five fillies are entered including Shamardal daughters out of Mezzo Soprano and Zahrat Dubai, a filly out of Petrushka by Tiger Hill and a daughter of Zibilene, who is by Pivotal. All are in training with Godolphin.

The 2010 Epsom Derby is due to be run on Saturday, June 5, 2010. It cost owners £325 to enter their horses as yearlings, with the next forfeit stage due on March 2, 2010, when it will cost connections an additional £1,000 to remain engaged in the race.

There are a further two options to enter the Classic: on April 6, 2010, when it will cost a total of £20,500 due in three separate payments and, finally, on May 31,2010, when it will cost connections £75,000.
