King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2), Ascot, 1m4f, 3yo colts

MONTEROSSO (c Dubawi - Porto Roca by Barathea)

Breeder: Darley in GB

DUBAWI'S reputation continued to soar on the fourth day of Royal Ascot as the stallion registered his second stakes winner of the meeting courtesy of Monterosso's impressive win in the King Edward VII Stakes.

The young stallion leapt on to the Royal Ascot scoresheet yesterday when another Darley-bred, Afsare, took the Hampton Court Stakes. Monterosso is Dubawi's ninth stakes winner overall.

He is also the second winner of the meeting out of a mare by Barathea following Rainfall.

Compared to those behind him in the King Edward VII, Monterosso owns an exotic background; his dam, Porto Roca, won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic in Australia and is already the dam of a minor winner by King's Best in that country. She is a half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner Bluebird The Word and out of a Group 3-placed daughter of the high-class former Henry Cecil-trained Salieri.

Monterosso's first ten dams were each bred in Australia.

Porto Roca has a yearling colt by Dubai Destination.

Arctic Cosmos ran a gallant second for John Gosden in the colours of the trainer's wife Rachel Hood. He is one of two stakes runners from the first crop of the Derby winner North Light, who stands at Adena Springs in Kentucky.
