Breeder: Con Troy in Ireland

MONKSLAND went another step towards justifying the £80,000 shelled out for him in May last year by running out a convincing winner of the Slaney Novice Hurdle.

His victory in the €24,000 event handed his sire Beneficial a slender lead over King's Theatre in the leading British and Irish jumps sires' list. The 22-year-old son of Top Ville is also the sire of Cooldine and Gungadu, and stands at Knockhouse Stud in Ireland.

A half-brother to point-to-point winner Bobcatbilly, Monksland is out of hurdles and point-to-point winner Cush Jewel. The daughter of Executive Perk, who is out of a half-sister to Pertemps Classic Novices' Hurdle winner Indian Scout, has a three-year-old colt by Bach and yearling filly by Mahler.

Peter Quinlan picked up Monksland for €5,800 at the 2007 Tattersalls Ireland November Sale. Resold for €8,000 to William Slattery at the Tattersalls Ireland August Sale, Monksland was purchased on behalf of his current connections by Mags O'Toole for £80,000 at last year's Brightwells Cheltenham Premier May Sale.
