Freedman aims to own Independence outright

INDEPENDENCE, dam of last week's Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Monitor Closely, will be offered for sale at the Tattersalls December Sales later this year.

The daughter of Selkirk, who is in foal to Raven's Pass, is part owned by Philip Freedman who hopes to own the 11-year-old mare outright after she goes under the hammer.

Independence is also the dam of Mount Nelson, winner of the Eclipse Stakes for Aidan O'Brien two years ago.

MonitorClosely made all the running to defeat Mastery by four and a half lengths in the Voltgeur, much to the surprise of Freedman, who said: "It was an amazing surprise that Monitor Closely won at York as I didn't think he had a chance of getting the trip."

Commenting on the sale of Independence, he added: "I own 70 per cent of the mare and several of my family members share the remainder. Providing she's still in foal on October 1, she will go to the December Sales where, hopefully, I will be able to buy them out."

Freedman also owns Independence's daughter, the winner Off Message, and is sending a yearling filly by Cape Cross out of the mare to Ed Dunlop later this year.
