US Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair put down

BLACK Tie Affair, 1991 US Horse of the Year and damsire of Mastercraftsman, was put down on Thursday at the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Kentucky due to laminitis. He was 24-years-old and had resided at Old Friends since July last year.

The British-bred son of Miswaki lit up the 1991 US season by capturing six consecutive stakes races including the Grade 1 Philip H. Iselin Handicap and Grade 2 Washington Park Handicap for owner Jeff Sullivan and trainer Ernie Poulos.

He went on to cap his season with a front-running win in the Breeders' Cup Classic over Twilight Agenda and Unbridled, in the process securing Horse of the Year and champion older male honours.

Black Tie Affair retired to stand at Vinery in Kentucky in 1992 as the winner of 18 races and of $3,370,694 in earnings. He was later relocated to Japan but not before he had sired the Grade 1 winners Formal Gold, who now stands in California, and Evening Attire, a tough, popular grey like his sire.

The stallion was repatriated to the US in 2004 to stand at O'Sullivan Farms in West Virginia. To date, he is the sire of 35 stakes winners.

As well as Mastercraftsman, Black Tie Affair also features as the damsire of that colt's Group 1-placed sister Famous as well as Grade 2 winner Nightmare Affair.

"It was an honor to be associated with such an amazing athlete," said Michael Blowen, founder of Old Friends. "The Old Friends team, headed by Dr. Byars, did everything we could to help this old warrior. In the end, he exhibited the same class as he did when he won the Breeders' Cup Classic. He was the best in every way."

Bred by S. Pekoff, Black Tie Affair was out of the winning Al Hattab mare Hat Tab Girl and a half-brother to Great Palm, winner of the Premio Presidente Della Republicca for Paul Cole.
