Million dollar barrier broken at Inglis

THE million dollar barrier was finally broken at the Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale as Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm secured Group 1 Allez Wonder for A$1 million (£645,134/€723,196) during day two of the three-day auction on Wednesday.

The seven-figure sale pushed Wednesday's session to a near A$10million gross and average of A$88,000, which represents a slight improvement on the corresponding day last year.

The overall sale has now grossed A$18million at an average of A$75,685. However, as with the first day, the clearance rate wasadrift of expectations, finishing at 64 per cent.

"Demand for well-credentialed fillies and mares continues to be very strong," said Mark Webster, managing director of Inglis.

"Over the years this sale has proven to reward buyers with the dams of champions such as Black Caviar, Sepoy and So You Think. They collectively cost less than A$200,000.

"No doubt there are a few of these bargain mares in this catalogue once again."

Allez Wonder, a daughter of Redoute's Choice, was sold by Princess Farm following a memorable career in which she won the 2009 Group 1 MRC Toorak Handicap and ran third in the Group 1 VRC Oaks.

Her purchase brought Patinack Farm's expenditure up to A$3,139,000 for 17 bought during the two days.

Banc De Fortune,a Group 1-placed mare with European connections, brought the second highest price of the day, albeit outside the ring when changing hands privately to agent James Bester for A$800,000 (£516,109/€578,601).

The seven-year-old daughter of Galileo was offered for sale in foal to Redoute's Choice by a partnership comprising consignor Yarraman Park Stud and British-based Breeding Capital, the bloodstock investment company fronted by William Sporborg and Simon Marsh.

The partnership purchased Banc De Fortune privately off the track and enjoyed a good result at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale last week when selling her first foal, a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock, for A$575,000.
