Midday and Love Divine half-brothers break duck

HENRY CECIL sent out two half-brothers to star mares to win both divisions of the 1m4f maiden at Haydock on Thursday.

In the first leg of the Football Pools Maiden Stakes, Midsummer Sun showed some of the talent that explains why he was a one-time talking horse for the Derby before finishing fifth on his debut last month.

Despite racing keenly, Midsummer Sun hit the forn two furlongs from home and dashed clear to win by six lengths from the Val Royal filly Lady Amakhala.

Juddmonte homebred Midsummer Sun is the three-year-old half-brother to outstanding mare Midday, winner of five
Group 1 races including the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and consecutive renewals of the Nassau Stakes.

Midday and Midsummer Sun are out of the Kingmambo mare Midsummer, a 1m3f winner and runner-up in the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial.

Midsummer is a half-sister to six other black-type performers headed by Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes winner Elmaamul, Oaks heroine Reams Of Verse and Yorkshire Cup scorer Manifest.

In the second leg of the maiden, Solar Sky - runner-up to World Domination first time out last month - went one better with a two-and-a-quarter-length defeat of the Deep Impact filly Sunday Bess.

Solar Sky is a Lordship Stud homebred son of Galileo and half-sister to 2000 Oaks heroine Love Divine.

Love Divine produced St Leger scorer Sixties Icon by Galileo, so he and Solar Sky are closely related.

Solar Sky and Love Divine are out of the Law Society mare La Sky, a dual winner over 1m2f and runner-up in the Group 3 Lancashire Oaks. La Sky is a three-parts sister to Champion Stakes winner Legal Case.

Both Midsummer Sun and Solar Sky hold entries for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.
